The Batakiai Hillfort, located in the southern part of the Batakiai village, is an important element of the Žemaičių Aukaimis defensive system. The hillfort, also known as Pilute or Swedish Hill, is situated at the confluence of the Ančia and Ūkis (Batakė) rivers. This site was used as a fortress for the Žemaičių Aukaimis settlement, providing shelter and protection from danger. The hillfort was a crucial part of the defense of the Karšuva land and a component of the Žemaičių defensive castles ring. In 1345, the Teutonic Knights defeated Grand Duke Algirdas here, and after the introduction of Christianity in 1387, Gintautas, the last Lithuanian High Priest (Krivis Krivaitis), chose Aukaimis as his final residence.

The Batakiai Hillfort, located in the southern part of Batakiai village, is an important historical and archaeological monument. Also known as Pilute, Pilaite, or Swedish Hill, it is situated at the confluence of the Ančia and Ūkis (Batakė) rivers. The hillfort's height and strategic location made it an important part of the Žemaičių Aukaimis defense system. It is believed that this site was a key fortress for Žemaičių Aukaimis, serving as a refuge for locals in times of danger. The hillfort played an active role in defending the Karšuva region and was part of the Žemaičių defensive castle ring. In 1345,
a significant victory of the Teutonic Knights over Grand Duke Algirdas took place near Aukaimis, but the fortress continued to play an important role in the region. After the introduction of Christianity in Lithuania in 1387, Gintautas, the last Lithuanian Krivis Krivaitis, chose Aukaimis as his final place of residence. Due to its historical and archaeological significance, the Batakiai Hillfort is not only a notable landmark but also an important witness to Lithuania's medieval history. Today, it serves as an excellent place for those wishing to better understand Lithuania’s defense history and medieval life.
