St. Teresa of Ávila Church, built between 1633 and 1654 by the Discalced Carmelites, is one of the most significant landmarks of sacred architecture in Vilnius. Closely connected to the Chapel of the Gate of Dawn, it was part of a vast Carmelite monastery complex. The church was founded by the Grand Duchy of Lithuania’s Deputy Chancellor Steponas Pacas and designed by Italian architects Constante Tencalla and Giovanni Battista Gisleni. In the 18th century, painter Motiejus Sluščianskis decorated the interior with frescoes depicting the life of St. Teresa.

The church has never been closed and became a parish church after the Carmelite monastery was dissolved in 1844. Together with the Gate of Dawn Chapel, it remains an important heritage site of Vilnius, attracting pilgrims and tourists alike.

St. Teresa of Ávila Church is an exceptional sacred architectural monument in Vilnius, built between 1633 and 1654 by the Discalced Carmelites, who established themselves in the city in 1626. The church was designed by Italian royal architects Constante Tencalla and Giovanni Battista Gisleni and funded by the Grand Duchy of Lithuania’s Deputy Chancellor Steponas Pacas. It stands directly across from the walled monastery and connects to it via the presbytery. The church’s interior took on its current form in the 18th century when Vilnius artist Motiejus Sluščianskis painted frescoes from 1760 to 1764 illustrating the life and works of St. Teresa. In 1783, a chapel was added on the Gate of Dawn street side, showcasing a
transitional style between Rococo and Classicism. The Discalced Carmelites were known for their strict observance of religious rules and mystical theological writings. Their monastery in Vilnius spanned three blocks adjacent to the city's defensive wall. Following the uprisings of 1831 and 1864, the Tsarist government dissolved the monastery, but St. Teresa’s Church remained open. Since 1844, it has served as a parish church alongside the Gate of Dawn Chapel. St. Teresa’s Church is not only a place of worship but also a vital historical and architectural monument. Its rich past, ties to the Discalced Carmelites' spiritual life, and remarkable architecture continue to attract pilgrims and cultural heritage enthusiasts.
