In Kretinga, a unique personality was born in the 18th century – Berekas Joselevičius, a participant in the T. Kosciuszko Uprising, an officer in Napoleon’s army, and a defender of Lithuanian-Polish freedom. Raised in a merchant family in the Jewish quarter, he stood out for his education and charisma. As a confidant of Vilnius Bishop I.J. Masalskis, B. Joselevičius traveled to many European cities, learned several languages, and embraced the ideas of freedom. Joining the insurgents, he formed the first modern Jewish military unit.
His contributions are commemorated in the names of streets in Poland, as well as in literature and art. In Kretinga, this hero is honored with a monument created by architect V. Mazurkevičius and sculptor G. Jonkus. The monument not only reminds of B. Joselevičius’s origins but also of his contribution to the fight for freedom by Jews, Lithuanians, Poles, and French.
