In the old cemetery of Kretinga, in front of the St. George Chapel, stands a remarkable monument that became the first symbol of the Awakening period in Lithuania. Designed by the renowned Kretinga architect Edmundas Giedrimas, the monument is made of Lithuanian fieldstone, weathered by nature’s trials—cold, rain, and sun. The stone is shaped like a heart, but pierced by a cross, symbolizing the nation’s suffering during the years of occupation.
The stone was donated by the famous Kretinga stone craftsman and Franciscan friar Vilius Orvidas, who spread the ideas of faith and independence through his work. The construction of the monument was initiated by the Kretinga group of the Lithuanian Reform Movement, aiming to commemorate the victims of the struggle for freedom and the occupations. This place is not only a historical monument but also a space for reflection on the nation’s strength and belief in the future.
