On the cliff by the Akmena River, on J. Basanavičius Street, stands a wooden angel that recalls the first church of Kretinga. Built in 1602, it was commissioned by the famous military leader and owner of Kretinga, Jonas Karolis Chodkevičius. The small wooden church was meant to commemorate one of the victories over the Swedes. However, when J.K. Chodkevičius saw it, he was disappointed – he desired a grander structure. Soon after, on the opposite bank of the Akmena River, a stone church was built in memory of the Battle of Salaspilis, and it stands to this day.
The old church and cemetery are gone, but the peaceful pine forest in this area invites visitors to stroll, sit, and enjoy the beautiful views. The Kretinga angel has become a symbol, reminding not only of the church's history but also of the legendary tunnels said to stretch beneath this area.
