A monument to Jonas Karolis Chodkevičius stands in the center of Kretinga, honoring this historical figure – the Grand Duchy of Lithuania’s Hetman, Vilnius Voivode, Count, and military leader. J.K. Chodkevičius was not only a prominent commander but also the builder of Kretinga’s church and Franciscan monastery. The monument, designed by architect Adomas Skiezgelas in 2009, is unique in its composition – J.K. Chodkevičius is depicted standing in front of open doors, symbolizing a view from the past into the future.
Behind him rises the ensemble of the Franciscan monastery and church, while in front, the bustling life of modern Kretinga unfolds. Born in 1560, Chodkevičius carried out his activities not only in Lithuania but also in Belarus and Ukraine, yet his heart belonged to Kretinga. In the monument, he is depicted calmly and confidently, as if he were at home.
