Kretinga is rightfully considered the center of the Franciscan Order in Lithuania. In the 17th century, at the initiative of J.K. Chodkevičius, the first Franciscan male monastery was established here, followed later by the lay Third Order. In 2000, the Franciscan family was joined by the Convent of the Sisters of St. Clare, located away from the city's noise and surrounded by a large garden. This convent attracts many with its mystery – the sisters lead a secluded, contemplative life, with a daily schedule revolving around prayer and work.
The Clare Sisters can be visited at designated times, but meetings take place through a grille – symbolizing the separation between spiritual and secular life. The convent’s chapel, designed by an Italian architect, invites peace and evokes Italy, the birthplace of the Franciscan orders.
