To better understand the culture and history of Kretinga, it is worth visiting the old town cemetery, which holds many stories. One of the most visited graves here is that of the Franciscan monk Jurgis Ambraziejus Pabrėža. In the 19th century, this monk was renowned not only as an excellent educator and preacher but also as a folk healer. His knowledge of botany and medicine allowed him to help people, and his research on the healing properties of plants earned him great respect.
After Father Ambraziejus' death, his modest grave was marked by a simple cross for a long time. It was only in the interwar period, through the efforts of the head of the Franciscan monastery, Augustinas Dirvelė, that a Neo-Gothic chapel was built on the grave. Today, this place attracts many visitors, where candles are lit and blessings are requested.
