In the central square of Kamajai town stands a monument dedicated to priest and poet Antanas Strazdas, one of the area’s most prominent historical landmarks. Created by sculptor A. Aleksandravičius, the monument was unveiled to commemorate the 100th anniversary of A. Strazdas’s death.
Antanas Strazdas (1760–1833) was a unique figure in Lithuanian literature and church history, known as the author of the first Lithuanian poetry collection, “Giesmės svietiškos ir šventos” (“Secular and Sacred Hymns”). With a rebellious nature, he rejected the traditional path of priesthood and became a wandering missionary, providing church services to rural communities and leaving a significant cultural legacy. His hymn “Pulkim ant kelių” (“Let Us Fall to Our Knees”) is still sung in Lithuanian churches today, underscoring the lasting importance of his work. The monument in Kamajai attracts tourists seeking cultural heritage sites.
