On July 13, 1945, partisans from Obeliai, Kriaunos, Aleksandravėlė, and other surrounding areas, led by Balys Vaičėnas, engaged in battle with units of the Soviet army and NKVD troops. A bunker and defensive trenches were established in the partisan camp, which have survived to this day. Unable to break through the partisans' resistance, the Soviets were forced to employ a positional attack strategy, but the partisans successfully managed to escape the encirclement. Seven Soviet soldiers died in the forest. In 2003, a bunker was restored and a memorial cross was erected at the site of the partisan battles, commemorating the history of the fight for freedom.
