Mikalojus Katkus (1852–1944), a renowned Lithuanian writer, ethnographer, and agronomist, was born in Ažytėnai, Kėdainiai District. He was the first in Lithuania to receive an education in agronomy and returned to his native Ažytėnai, where he engaged in farming and ethnographic work. Katkus was also known as a folk educator and distributor of banned literature. In his later years, he wrote the work Balanos Gadynė. Today, Ažytėnai welcomes visitors to the M. Katkus Memorial Museum, which showcases exhibits about his life and contributions, alongside an exhibition depicting everyday life in the Krakių region during the 19th and 20th centuries. Before his death, Katkus requested a simple burial site on the banks of the Ažytė River, with a view of people working in the fields.
