In the village of Naujoji Kirsna, now part of Lazdijai District, the homestead of Juozas Karauskas is an important historical site. On February 11, 1948, a two-hour battle took place here with an MGB rifle regiment led by Captain Kuznetsov. During these clashes, partisans from the Šarūnas Battalion of the Dainava District lost their lives: Vincas Bartaška (Vaidotas), born in 1917 (or 1922) in Mikniškiai; Vincas Busilas (Ramunis), born in 1921 in Mikniškiai; Juozas Jančia (Rytas), born in 1922 in Pakirsniai; Stasys Keršulis (Žirafa), born in 1926 in Kirsnelė; Juozas Zdanavičius (Trispalvis), born in 1925 in Gražuliai; and the communicator Juozas Karauskas (Dunojus), born in 1905 in Naujoji Kirsna. This site serves as a reminder of the partisans' struggle for independence and promotes tourism in the Lazdijai region.
