Adolfas Ramanauskas-Vanagas, a prominent leader of the partisan movement in Southern Lithuania and the Commander of the Defense Forces of the Lithuanian Freedom Fight Union (LLKS), was born on March 6, 1918, in the USA. In 1921, his family returned to Lithuania, and in 1936, Ramanauskas graduated from the "Žiburys" Gymnasium in Sejny, located in the Lazdijai district. Following the onset of the second Soviet occupation, he became a partisan in April 1945. Initially, Ramanauskas led a partisan squad in the Nemunaitis area. In the summer of 1945, he became the commander of the Dzūkai Group's Merkinė Battalion, and in 1946, he took command of the Merkys Battalion. In the fall of 1947, he assumed leadership of the Dainava
District and was elected as the commander of the Southern Lithuania partisan region in 1948. After the chief partisan leader Jonas Žemaitis-Vytautas fell ill in 1951, Ramanauskas became the deputy chairman of the LLKS Council and the commander of the Armed Forces. Unfortunately, in 1956, he was arrested in Kaunas and taken to the KGB prison in Vilnius, where he was brutally tortured and interrogated. In 1957, the Supreme Court of the Lithuanian SSR sentenced Ramanauskas to death, and he was executed in prison, leaving an indelible mark on Lithuanian history. Today, when visiting Lazdijai, you can immerse yourself in the story of this hero and honor his memory by recalling the struggles for freedom and independence.
