Kazys Musteikis was a prominent Lithuanian military and public figure, born in 1894 in the village of Stučių (Tauragnai parish). In 1915, he graduated from the Orenburg Officer School and participated in World War I, where he was wounded. After the war, he returned to Lithuania and became a volunteer in the Lithuanian army, contributing to the struggles for independence. After graduating from the Vienna Higher School of Commerce in 1928, he returned to military service, holding important positions at the Military Academy and the General Staff of the Lithuanian Army. He was promoted to the rank of brigadier general
and served as the Minister of National Defense from 1938 to 1940. Kazys Musteikis was a staunch defender of Lithuania’s freedom, demanding armed resistance against the Soviet Union’s occupation. Later, Musteikis fled to Germany and eventually emigrated to the United States, where he actively participated in Lithuanian diaspora activities. In his memory, a wooden pillar-sculpture (stogastulpis), created by folk artist Stasys Karanauskas, was erected at the site of his former homestead in 1995. In 2019, an informational stand was installed to honor the legacy of this distinguished native of the region.
