From the Balbieriškis outcrop, located on the left bank of the Nemunas River Valley, one can enjoy one of the most impressive natural landscapes in Lithuania. This site is renowned for its colorful and steep cliffs, and as early as 1974, it was declared a geological natural monument.
The height of the Balbieriškis outcrop reaches approximately 40 meters, with an absolute height of about 87 meters at the top. The slopes here are extremely steep—about 50 degrees, and in some places, they are even vertical. The length of the outcrop along the Nemunas River is approximately 1.7 kilometers. Visitors can observe a cross-section of limnoglacial deposits formed in the Simnas–Stakliškės preglacial basin at the end of the Pleistocene. Most of these deposits consist of varved clay, which is widely used in Lithuania for producing various ceramic products such as bricks, tiles, and drainage pipes.
