The Minor Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Žemaičių Kalvarija is a remarkable monument of culture and spirituality, standing as the fourth iteration of the current brick structure. Construction began in 1780 and was completed in 1822. Unfortunately, a fire in 1896 destroyed valuable archives, including a book documenting miracles that occurred in Žemaičių Kalvarija. In the early 20th century, the church was restored according to the design of architect A. Kosakauskas after the fire damage. During World War I, two bells were removed from the sanctuary, and the building was renovated several times during the interwar period, notably in 1928 when the Marian Fathers settled there. In 1939, the interior was refurbished. In 1988, Pope John Paul II granted this sanctuary the status of a Minor Basilica, and in 2006, the image of the Mother of God with the Child was crowned with papal crowns, emphasizing its miraculous significance and symbol of sanctity.
