The history of Prienai Church began in 1609 with the construction of the first wooden church. Unfortunately, it was destroyed by fire in 1655 during a war. A second church was built in 1674, but it was later replaced in 1750 by the current wooden church, constructed from pine logs. The church has been restored several times from the 19th to the 20th century, including exterior and interior repainting, roof replacement, and floor renovation.
The church stands in a quiet location, away from the main street, to the north of the Nemunas River. It is surrounded by an irregularly shaped churchyard, with a masonry chapel located in the eastern part. The church’s plan resembles a Greek cross and it is a three-nave structure. The main facade, preserved from the mid-18th century, features Baroque style elements. The Prienai Church is one of the oldest and most beautiful examples of wooden sacred architecture in the Diocese of Vilkaviškis.
