The Battle of Salaspils, fought on September 27, 1605, is considered one of the largest battles of the war between Sweden and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (1600–1611), during which Sweden sought to capture the eastern Baltic Sea region. In this battle, the Lithuanian army, led by the Grand Hetman of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Jonušas Karolis Chodkevičius, defeated an army of the Swedish Kingdom that was three times larger. The Battle of Salaspils is a remarkable example of the victories of the Lithuanian army, and it brought renown to Hetman Chodkevičius throughout Europe.
