The history of Smilgiai Church of the Crucified Jesus began around 1757 when the nobleman Karolis Čiolkovičius built a chapel in the Smilgiai village. Unfortunately, over time, this chapel fell into disrepair. In 1862, an old chapel from Pabiržė cemetery was acquired and relocated to Smilgiai, with its decayed walls replaced. This chapel exhibited neoclassical features and originally had three altars, though services were held only occasionally.
The current Smilgiai Church of the Crucified Jesus, constructed in 1942, is an excellent example of neoclassical architecture in Lithuania. The brick, rectangular-plan, and single-towered church embodies timeless aesthetic and historical values. It has become an integral part of the Smilgiai community and attracts both locals and tourists interested in Lithuanian sacred architecture.
