The Kirkilai Karstic Lakes region is characterized by a high density of sinkholes, reaching up to 200 units per square kilometer. Most of them are located below the groundwater level, forming impressive small lakes. This unique area is a rare phenomenon, not only in Lithuania but also in Europe, as it is home to colonies of green and purple sulfur bacteria, found only in Italy.
The Kirkilai Karstic Lakes walking trail allows visitors to explore these unique water bodies. The path winds through wetlands and peninsulas, and from a boardwalk, visitors can enjoy stunning views.
