Kupiškis (Aukštupėnai) Hillfort is a significant historical site located near the town of Kupiškis, close to the Kupiškis Reservoir and the village of Aukštupėnai. The hillfort is situated on a massive, elongated highland on the left bank of the Lėvuo River, with the northern base of the hillfort washed by the Aukštupis Stream. The hillfort is surrounded by meadows, and the cultural layer was found on its edges and slopes.
Historians believe that this hillfort was an early wooden community castle-refuge, which could have been the earliest nucleus of the future town. In ancient times, the area around Kupiškis was inhabited by the Baltic tribe called the Selonians, who lived in the southernmost part of their lands. It is believed that the fortifications or castle of Kupiškis Hillfort were destroyed during the first campaigns of the Teutonic Order's army around 1240.
