Nemenčinė is a town with deep historical roots and a mosaic of various cultures, languages, and religions. This area, named after a small stream, has long been home to diverse communities that reflect the events and cultural harmony of the past. Archaeological finds confirm that signs of human life in the Nemenčinė region date back to the 1st century. The Mindaugas-era hillfort, standing near Nemenčinė, testifies to the defensive fortress of the Grand Duke of Lithuania. However, this place also recalls the painful times of World War II when Nazis and their local
collaborators took the lives of hundreds of Jewish residents. The Jewish community living in Nemenčinė and its surroundings was brutally massacred, and their synagogue and school were burned. A monument commemorating the Holocaust victims and the old Jewish cemetery are significant historical sites, bearing witness to past events and our responsibility to preserve and pass on these historical facts to future generations. The memorial, which draws commemorations and remembrance of the victims' stories each year, holds an important place in our collective memory.
