In July-August 1941, mass executions of Kražiai Jews took place. These were carried out in two locations: Kuprė Forest and near Medžiokalnis. In August 1941, during an execution organized by the Nazi German authorities, 71 Jewish residents of Kražiai (men, women, and children) were killed and buried near Medžiokalnis. Today, the inscription on the monument remains: "At this site on 02.08.1941, Nazis and their collaborators killed 71 Jews from Kražiai." The inscription in Hebrew notes that 71 Jews from Kražiai were killed: 6 men and women, and 65 children. Historian St. Buchaveckas called this the "Massacre of Jewish Children." After the 1941 killings, only about 20 members of the Jewish community remained in Kražiai district – they either hid in Lithuania or managed to escape to the depths of the USSR in time.
