The memory of the writer was immortalized by another Kelmė artist, Juozas Liaudanskis, who created many stone sculptures for Kelmė. His son, Romas Liaudanskis, who attended the commemorative lesson, recounted how his father, at the age of eighty and suffering from diabetes, would rise at six in the morning and spend twelve hours carving the stone that land reclamation workers had brought to the bank of the Kražantė River, until he succeeded in creating the face of Bronius Laucevičius — Vargšas.

Bronislovas Klimašauskas recalled how, once while passing by the sculpture, he saw Liaudanskis crying. Vandals had broken the nose off his sculpture. However, the stone carver did not give up. He deepened the facial features and repaired the damage caused by the vandals.

The stone carver dreamed of further refining and polishing the monument. However, he died before he could complete his work. The monument to Bronius Laucevičius — Vargšas was unveiled in 1988.
