Vladislovas Sirokomlė, upon visiting Dūkštos, observed a solemn and luxurious church in this remote location, which was quite unexpected. The aftermath of the 1863 uprising was strongly felt here – the Catholic community lost their church, which was transferred to the Orthodox. By 1868, the Dūkštos sanctuary had become an Orthodox church, despite the local inhabitants maintaining their faith. To alter the religious structure, Russian colonists were invited, and the Russian Agricultural Bank, supporting this effort, acquired the Airėnai Manor and relocated several Orthodox serf families from Polesia in 1904. However, during World War I, most of them, along with the priest, returned to Russia, leaving the church abandoned. In 1918, after fifty years, the local community finally regained their sanctuary, where they could freely worship once again.
