This is the widest point of the Curonian Spit, stretching 3.8 km across. It is believed that the name of the cape and the nearby bay originates from the Curonian surname Bulvikis. However, there is another theory about the origin of this name: in Swedish, the word "bolja" means "wave" and "vik" means "bay," so it is possible that the name Bulvikis is of Swedish origin.

Before the large dunes were afforested, the area of Bulvikis Cape was growing rapidly. For example, from 1837 to 1910, it extended by
an average of 7 meters annually. Now, the reverse process is happening—the cape is relentlessly retreating due to the currents of the lagoon washing it away. From Bulvikis Cape and the bay, there is a magnificent panorama of the Curonian Lagoon shores, including Ventės Cape. On a clear day, the opposite side of the Curonian Lagoon seems within arm's reach, but this impression is deceptive. The width of the lagoon between Bulvikis and Ventės Capes is over 8 km, with a depth of about 3 meters.
