The Great Dune Ridge of the Curonian Spit stretches north and south, interrupted only at the widest parts of the spit, Bulvikis and Birštvynas Capes, where the dunes have been blown far into the lagoon. In this part of the spit, the Great Dune Ridge is green: its peaks are covered with mountain pines, and its slopes and interdunes with forests of common pines, most of which were planted.
From the 53-meter-high Preila Dune, a stunning view of the Baltic Sea and the lagoon coast opens up. In the far south, you can even see Grobštas Cape, part of the Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation. Closer to the dune, on the lagoon shore, Preila Cape and the bay wind along. On the other side of the lagoon, Ventė Cape is clearly visible.
During the Soviet era, several artists enjoyed painting on Preila Dune, which led the locals to give it a second name – Artists' Dune.
