The wall of Gargždai's "Minija" cinema is adorned with a distinctive mural that has become a symbol of the town's culture and history, paying tribute to its past. This artwork commemorates three football players from the Jewish sports club "Maccabi," and features the name of Gargždai written in Yiddish, highlighting the significant role of the Jewish community in the town.
Before World War II, Jews made up a substantial portion of Gargždai's population. In 1939, they constituted one-third of the town's inhabitants, contributing greatly to its economic and cultural development. This mural symbolizes the historical interaction between
the town and its Jewish community, helping to preserve the memory of this important part of Gargždai's heritage.
The creation of the mural was an important initiative by the Gargždai community to commemorate the Year of Lithuanian Jewish History. The artwork is based on a photograph by local photographer George (Hirsch) Birman, who grew up in Gargždai and captured the life of the town through his lens. Artists Tadas Šimkus and Marius Skrupskis were responsible for bringing this mural to life, which not only beautifies the town's space but also serves as a quiet lesson on community, cultural diversity, and the importance of history.
