The hillfort is situated in a picturesque location on a separate hill, approximately 130 meters northeast of Lake Nerespinka and 170 meters south of Lake Galvė. During excavations, archaeologists discovered handmade, striated pottery, characteristic of the period from the first millennium BC to the early centuries AD. This suggests that Varnikai Hillfort was inhabited quite early. Varnikai is a hillfort with a very small site area, making it unsuitable as a significant defensive castle but ideal for use as a hideout or lookout post. Unfortunately, there is a lack of written sources to illuminate the significance and functions of this hillfort in the historical context of Trakai, especially considering its proximity to the important old trade route to Vilnius.
