In the Trakai District Municipality, near Žuklijai village on the northern shore of Lake Vilkokšnis, stands the Žuklijai Hillfort. It is often mistaken for another hillfort with the same name in the Šakiai District.
The hillfort, with its steep, treeless slopes, is visible from afar. At its northern foot lies the remains of an ancient settlement. To the west, a crescent-shaped hill with gentle slopes adds to the landscape. According to legend, the larger hillfort was built by men going to war, using their hats, while the smaller one was built upon their return, as not all were protected by the gods.
The hillfort dates back to the mid-1st millennium to the early 2nd millennium. Archaeological excavations conducted in 1955 by the Institute of History revealed significant findings, now preserved at the National Museum of Lithuania.
