Art Installation at the Former Site of the Jewish Synagogue

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Gargždai was known for its vibrant Jewish community, centered around a wooden synagogue located on the western side of Turgaus Square. This building became a gathering place for the community, with a Jewish people's bank, school, and rabbi's house forming a residential quarter nearby. In 1923, with permission from the government of the Republic of Lithuania, the Jewish community was allowed to build a new brick synagogue near the old one. The new house of worship was ceremoniously opened in 1927-1928. However, both of these significant religious buildings were destroyed during the war.
Today, at the former site of the synagogues, near the "Time Team" basketball court, the Gargždai community has created an artistic memorial – a six-pointed star symbolizing the historical and cultural heritage, while also commemorating the lost Jewish community.
