On the eastern side of the town of Aukštadvaris (just before entering the town when traveling from Trakai), you can see Gallows Hill, also known as Šiba Hill, densely covered with pine trees. During pagan times, this hill was a sacred site where offerings were made. It was a place of worship for our ancestors' gods.
During the peasant uprisings, disobedient serfs were hanged here, and in 1863, participants of the uprising were executed, with their bodies thrown into the nearby Lake Nava. The steep ascent from the Trakai side is about 100 meters high. From the top of the hill, there is a splendid view of Lake Nava, now the Aukštadvaris Water Reservoir, which connects a chain of five lakes. Gallows Hill reaches an altitude of 170 meters above sea level.
