Kartupėnai Hillfort – Bisenė Castle, 13th – 14th century
Near the Jurbarkas-Kaunas road stands the high Kartupėnai Hillfort. Some historians associate this hillfort with Bisenė Castle. Bisenė Castle is known as the first Lithuanian castle to suffer from the aggression of the Teutonic Order. Peter von Dusburg, a Prussian chronicler who detailed the Crusade period, mentions that in 1283, the Prussian Order's Grand Master Gerhard von Quertas crossed the Nemunas River on ice and attacked the Lithuanian castle. Some defenders were taken captive, others were killed, and the castle was burned during a guard change on April 4, 1316.
