The name of the place is derived from the name of the goddess Veliona, commemorated by erecting her sculpture in the town in 2010. The uniquely shaped sculpture was created by sculptor Erikas Daugulis. Veliona appears to be arriving in a boat that connects the present with the past, life with the afterlife, hovering above the ground. Pagans believed that the spirits living underground and their goddess Veliona influenced the fertility of the land and the fecundity of animals. The trees in her boat symbolize life, while the roots penetrating through symbolize that everything has another form of life.
