The port in Smalininkai has been operational since the late 19th century, where ships were left to winter. It is no coincidence that in 1811, a water measurement station was established in Smalininkai. The stone "steps," built in 1886, were used to measure water levels. In 1926, a water level monitoring tower with a "well" for recording water levels was installed. This river water level measurement station is one of the oldest in Europe. The complex of structures at Smalininkai port, including the water measurement station, the port, and the embankment, has been granted national significance.
