In the lush park of Gargždai, the commemorative cross "In Memory of the Nation's Pain" was solemnly erected in 1989 as a symbol of the society's suffering and remembrance. This marked the first official commemoration of the Day of Mourning and Hope, signifying the sorrowful historical moment of June 14, 1941, when the mass deportations of Lithuanian residents to Siberia by the Soviet Union began. From the Klaipėda district municipalities alone, approximately 2,402 people were deported to the harsh lands of Siberia between 1941 and 1953, forced to endure long-term life in inhumane conditions and hard labor in the remote areas of the Soviet Union.
