In the early 20th century, the Kaišiadorys Cathedral was surrounded by a stone fence with ornate gates reflecting the cathedral’s main façade. However, during Russian rule and the Soviet era, the cathedral fell into neglect. Teofilius Matulionis, the second bishop of Kaišiadorys, was prohibited from fulfilling his duties.
In 1966, the original fence and gates were demolished. Efforts to rebuild them began only after Lithuania regained independence in 1992. While the new fence aimed to replicate the original appearance, it was made of metal rods instead of stone, and the gates, though harmonious in style, were simpler and made from different materials.
The current fence and gates were completed around 1997, with the courtyard gates designed by architect Brunonas Bakaitis. They stand as a blend of historical homage and modern adaptation, preserving the spirit of the cathedral’s surroundings.
