Monument to Duke Michał Kleofas Oginski and His Descendants - 250 Years

Perhaps the greatest contribution of the Oginski family was the cultivation of cultural traditions for over two centuries. In the early 19th century, Michał Kleofas Oginski, a skilled diplomat who fought for Lithuania's independence, sought refuge in Rietavas after falling out of favor with the Tsar. Today, he is best remembered as a composer.
His son, Irenėjus Oginskis, supported the publication of Lithuanian calendars by Laurynas Ivinskis and books by Simonas Daukantas and Bishop Motiejus Valančius while living in Rietavas. His grandson, Bogdanas Oginskis, founded the first music school in Rietavas and maintained a symphony orchestra.
The monument, unveiled on September 26, 2015, by R. Midvikis, features the heraldic symbol of the Oginski family crest, a lily, carved in granite.
