The monument was erected in 1928 to commemorate the tenth anniversary of Lithuania's declaration of independence. The initiative for its construction came from the Tverai Riflemen. The construction cost was 1500 litas. The monument was originally surrounded by a wooden fence with a wavy top.
In 1963, the Soviet authorities ordered the monument to be demolished. One of the demolishers (a bulldozer operator) removed the cross from the top of the monument and asked the people to take it to the priest. Thus, the cross was preserved until the monument was restored. The monument was rebuilt in 1989, with the original cross from 1928 placed on top.
