The first records of Žiežmariai date back to the 14th century when Lithuanians fought against the Teutonic Knights in the Battle of Strėva on February 2, 1348. Its favorable geographical location between Vilnius and Kaunas has long attracted artisans and traders of various nationalities. Žiežmariai became the largest trade and craft center in the region. A significant portion of those developing various businesses were Jews. Representatives of Vilnius merchants had shops that sold both foreign and domestic fabrics, silk, and other goods. Markets were held on Thursdays, and trade fairs took place four times a year, attracting merchants from nearby towns with a variety of goods. In the town square stands the Freedom Monument. Initially erected as an obelisk to commemorate the tenth anniversary of independence, it was later reconstructed. The monument was demolished during the Soviet era but was rebuilt and consecrated in 1991.
