Ignalina is one of three cities in Lithuania (along with Vilnius and Vilkaviškis) where the first groups of the Order of Malta Relief Organization were established. For many years, the Ignalina group has been led by Vidutė Ektienė.
During Ignalina's 150th anniversary celebration, the idea arose to erect a sculpture. It serves as a token of gratitude to the supporters of the Order of Malta, a reminder of those in need of help in the town and region, and a gift to Lithuania on the occasion of its centenary of statehood.
The sculpture was created by Ignalina artist Teofilis Patiejūnas and was named Teofilius in honor of Blessed Teofilius Matulionis. This is the first such tribute to the Order of Malta in Lithuania.
Presenting the sculpture, V. Ektienė said: “May this be a gift to Lithuania on its centenary of restored independence and a reminder to the people of Ignalina to recognize, empathize with, and assist those in need whenever possible.”
