Mural "Ignalina's Legend"

The project "Ignalina is ARTi" has gifted the residents of Ignalina and the city's visitors three artworks that will always be open to the public.

On the wall of the Ignalina Cultural Center, you can see an expressive work created especially for Ignalina by the artist brothers Algirdas and Remigijus Gataveckai. The artists were inspired by the local myth of the love between the Teutonic knight Ignas and the princess Lina, as well as the symbol of Ignalina, the water lily.

The project "Ignalina is ARTi" has gifted the residents of Ignalina and the city's visitors three artworks that will always be open to the public. On the wall of the Ignalina Cultural Center, you can see an expressive work created especially for Ignalina by the artist brothers Algirdas and Remigijus Gataveckai. The artists were inspired by the local myth of the love between the Teutonic knight Ignas and the princess Lina, as well as the symbol of Ignalina, the water lily. According to the authors, the lily floats on the water's surface, on the thin line between the forgotten lake bottom and the attention of daylight. Through this mural, the artists wanted to lift the beautiful town legend, depicted as lily-shaped balloons, into the
air, to remind people, inspire discussions about its meaning to the townspeople, how we can continue to preserve and nurture this myth, building the identity of our region upon it as a foundation. At the same time, the colorful balloons symbolize a celebration—a celebration of love, depicted through the emotional figures of Ignas and Lina. Another symbolic aspect of the mural is its sacred touch, visible in the figures of the lovers. This aims to remind us of the depth and importance of traditions, history, legends, and the feeling of love, and the importance of nurturing and preserving them. The wall was decorated by Tadas Vincaitis - Plūgas, the best representative and one of the pioneers of the neofresco genre in Lithuania.
