It is believed that the church in Žasliai was built around 1460. It is thought to stand on a hillfort, previously called Pajauta's Tomb. Father Kazimieras Kibelis and the parishioners built the current brick church between 1897 and 1902. In 1905, during Easter, a fight broke out in the churchyard between Polish and Lithuanian parishioners, who disagreed on the language of the services. In 1915, during battles, shells created two holes in the church walls, damaged the towers, and shattered all the windows. Bullet marks are still visible on the western side of the church. On March 25, 1944, Father Vincentas Sladkevičius, the future Cardinal, celebrated his first Mass here. In 1926, Bishop Juozapas Kukta of Kaišiadorys was installed in St. George's Church, as the construction of Kaišiadorys Cathedral was not yet completed. This event marked the practical beginning of the Kaišiadorys Diocese's operations.
