The parish was established in 1520. The first church was built at the confluence of the Neris and Biržė rivers. The design for the new brick church was prepared by architect Vaclovas Michnevičius. The stone masonry church was started in 1909 at the confluence of the Neris and Bošė rivers through the efforts and funding of the parishioners and then-parish priest Juozapas Bučys. Over 19 years, the walls were built, and the roof was covered twice. In 1928, after Father Juozapas Bučys left Gegužinė, the new parish priest, Father Stanislovas Pupaleigis (also written as Pupalaigis), continued the church's construction. The church, still not fully completed, was blessed in 1932 and consecrated in 1938. One of the most famous artists of interwar Lithuania, Vincentas Jakševičius, worked on the church's interior and died while working on it.
