Kloniai (Rooster) Dune is a unique natural site in Dzūkija National Park, near Marcinkonys. It is one of the largest inland dunes in Lithuania, formed after the Ice Age when strong winds carried sand and piled it into impressive mounds. The dune is about 20 meters high and stretches for more than 0.5 km. Locals call it the Rooster Dune, as legend tells that devils once lived here, but the sound of crowing roosters drove them away. This place is also historically significant – during the interwar period, the dune was used for military training. Today, it is a popular spot for tourists and hikers. From the dune, panoramic views of Dzūkija’s forests open up, making it a perfect place to experience the wild nature and enjoy the beauty of sandy landscapes without traveling to the seaside.
