Marcinkonys Church of the Holy Apostles Simon and Jude Thaddeus is an exceptional sacred heritage site in Dzūkija, Varėna district. The first church was built here in 1770, and the current one in 1880. This wooden twin-towered shrine combines elements of folk sacred architecture, Neo-Gothic, and Baroque styles. During the press ban imposed by Tsarist Russia, priest Jonas Šoblickas actively fostered Lithuanian identity, held services in Lithuanian, and distributed forbidden publications. Inside, the church preserves 18th-century paintings, unique Baroque altars, and a sculpture of Jesus of Nazareth. In the churchyard, a 1933 cross with two intersecting elements, 14 chapels of the Stations of the Cross, and a folk-style belfry have been preserved. In 2018, the church and its yard were restored through the efforts of parishioners.
