By its operating principle, this plant is unique in the Baltic Sea region. It features two water reservoirs: an upper and a lower basin. The generators at Kruonis HAE pump water from the Kaunas Reservoir to the upper basin, which is situated 100 meters above the reservoir's water level, during periods of low electricity demand and surplus cheap energy (such as nighttime). During the day, when the demand for energy increases and the upper basin is full, the Kruonis Plant can operate as a conventional hydroelectric plant.
Construction of the plant began in 1984, and the last, fourth generator became operational in 1998.
