The Tallinn City Gates were an important part of the medieval defense system. Since Tallinn was constantly under attack, a strong defense plan was created, with the gates playing a central role. In the Middle Ages, Tallinn was known as the city with the strongest defense system in all of Northern Europe. The gates were not only defensive structures but also part of daily life – they were closed every evening at nine o’clock. Those who failed to return in time risked imprisonment. This strict rule highlights the importance of security and control in medieval Tallinn. Today, the surviving gates are one of the most striking symbols of the Old Town, reminding visitors of the city’s resilience and its strict medieval order.
