Kaukinė Lake

Kaukinė Lake might be of glaciokarst origin. A chunk of ice that broke off from the glacier was buried in sandy sediments. As the climate warmed, the ice melted, causing the sandy hill to collapse. The lake is located in the middle of the village, at a crossroads. It is a perfectly circular lake, covering an area of 1.2 hectares with a depth of 14-18 meters. Another theory suggests that a fragment of a celestial body might have fallen into Kaukinė village, creating a crater that later filled with water. Nearby, impressive Kaukinė lindens grow, over 100 years old, more than 30 meters high, with trunk circumferences exceeding 5 meters. This is a place where many mysteries of nature, mythology, and culture intertwine, presenting many puzzles for scientists and local residents alike.
