Sigulda New Castle

Sigulda New Castle was built between 1878 and 1881 as a summer residence for the Kropotkin family. The Neo-Gothic building with a National Romantic interior quickly became an important cultural symbol of the region. In the interwar period, it was known as the “Writers’ Castle,” as famous Latvian authors such as Kārlis Skalbe, Aleksandrs Čaks, Rainis, and Jānis Akurateris visited here. During the Soviet era, the castle was converted into a sanatorium, but after the restoration of independence it was renovated and became the seat of Sigulda Municipality as well as a cultural venue. Today, the castle is open to visitors, hosting exhibitions, conferences, weddings, and guided tours.
